Welcome Back!

School supply craze, uniform purchases, new shoes, fresh fades, stuffing backpacks... oh the thrill of a new school year. Yet, what uncle Ben said to Peter Parker in Spiderman rings true in this moment when he leaned over and whispered, “With great power comes great responsibility.” Each new year provides a new opportunity, a higher platform to display our power. Each student is a young version of tomorrow’s legacy. Thus, it is of the utmost importance to reach within, while looking outside and around us to see that there is the potential and support necessary to be great.

To all teachers and staff: Know that you have been called for such a time as this. The children in the building are depending on you, your expertise, your training. Yet, most importantly, they are waiting for you to rise in a way where your training and your certification couldn’t have possibly prepared you for. The in the trenches interactions of struggle, tension, triumph, and grit that can only be experienced if you were there; in that moment. Remember to take care of yourself throughout the year, to press pause, to go for that walk, to rest up, to actually go home after school at a decent hour some days. Self-care is essential, as our classrooms and offices depend on our overall health and wellness.

To our faithful parents: Here’s to blessing you for the meals, the homework help, the laundry, the pickups and drop offs, the rushing to bed and hurry up and get out the door announcements. Project 214 sees you, and we support you. You’ve got this, your kid/s will be awesome and in need of improvement all year long. That’s what makes them human, that’s what makes us human. So grace yourself and brace yourself-here she comes...2019-2020 school year.

Dear STUDENTS: There will be moments of defeat. You may have forgotten your homework assignment, left your device charger at home, your sweater on the bus. It’s ok! The next day will send you another chance to yank the sweater off the seat, remember your assignment binder, and stuff your charger in your backpack before nightfall.

Take in the minutes and hours, your school experience is temporary. Enjoy your friends, acknowledge your teachers, and see how hard your parents are trying to be your biggest ally along the way. All parties will not get it all RIGHT. Yet, one thing is clear, we are ALL rooting for your success.

May our school buildings remain a place anointed for learning, and not gunshots. May all students and staff be kept safe this year, while troubled youth find the help they need; this we pray.

Here’s to a stupendous, outrageous, desirous new school year.

You are powerful.

You are mighty.

You are worthy.

You are smart.

You are able.

From all of us at Project 214, Happy New School Year! You’ve got this.
